Excerpt from Chapter 1
The battlefield grew dark with the overhead skies clashing their thunderous complaint. The prodigious masses of clouds from the east opposed the more ominous of the west. The resonant sounds of the Ghoddess boomed their grievance across the heavens as She laid tears upon the bloody arena. The once abundant valley rich with violet meadows, plush with teal grass, and full of small creatures, now sat burdened with death. Nothing left of the terrain but the mutilated corpses of a defeated army, and a few trees that stood barren of leaf.
“The war is over. Perhaps now we can return home.”
“Observe what we leave in our wake. Take note of the many who will never return home.”
“My eyes have already scanned the bereavement of death. Do you think my heart has not swelled in agony?”
“I suppose it has. Accept my apologies for the lack of compassion for my First Officer.”
“That is not necessary. You are the warrior with most compassion, Commander. It even extends to the enemy. I wish I had the strength to be as kind, but I still feel animosity towards our foe.”
“This was the last male army to oppose us. They fought well, and I expect it was for a cause deep rooted.”
“A deep rooted hatred for female dominance is an unlikely cause.”
“I agree, but it was their cause just the same. They fought for their belief, and died for ours. Death should never hold power over a belief. A way of life should grace our land, not bloody it.”
“We did not choose the battle ground.”
“No, but we rallied in the forces to obliterate with little to no reconcilable negotiations.”
“That stance must be taken up with Council, Commander. You cannot solve politics on the battlefield.”
The Warrior heaved a sigh, “You are correct, which reminds me. Contact Council, notify them that it is finished.”
The First Officer headed back to camp where the warriors and soldiers gathered in revelry for their last victory. She searched for the Transmission Officer to relay the message to Absolutia.
The warrior continued her gaze across the territory remembering her youth. Growing up in the splendor of Sanguine Valley was but a tender flicker in her eyes. The serenity of the valley had clearly taken on a new meaning of its name. Still sanguine, but in picturesque form, not spiritual…it was blood red.
From behind her, the Commander felt the sleek fingers press her shoulders, and the warm breath pierce her ear.
“Celebrate with me in the arena,” an alluring voice pleaded.
She turned around to accept the embrace from the subordinate soldier. She bent her head and locked in gaze with the cocoa colored eyes. “You wish to make love amongst the blood?”
“I do. It’s been too long a time without you inside me.”
“True, I haven’t combated beside you in several years, but I no longer desire that particular practice.”
“You no longer lust?”
“Yes, I lust, but never again amid my slaughter.” She had noted several soldiers during her scan of the land, and their sexual display.
“But it was the Privilege of Victory that you sought most.”
“I was young and arrogant, and had seen very little of war’s aftermath. It now sickens me.”
“You have become soft, Sloan. You ‘sicken’ me.” The smaller woman pulled from the embrace, but Sloan held her wrists.
