Excerpt from Chapter 1
The long dusty road leading to the tiny farmhouse that seemed to sit in the middle of nowhere was laden with wagon wheel ruts and horseshoe tracks. Race Creed studied the road as she tiredly trudged forward. What the markings told her was there had been many travelers, and most had gone in the opposite direction in which she journeyed.
The ‘War between the States’ had left many roads and thoroughfares damaged and even destroyed in its wake. Race had witnessed much of the destruction during her trek. It seemed road after desolate road had all looked the same to her. Dirt paths beaten down, trod on, and left for weather to either wash away or harden into brick.
This road held a difference for Race. She looked down at her shoddy boots, old and worn, as she shuffled one foot in front of the other and watched the disruption of dust with each step. This road had a farmhouse.
She was haggard from the lengthy journey across the states. She hadn’t eaten in days, and her stomach argued intensely with the fact. Her last meal and good time had been in Atlanta where she spent the remainder of her small savings. She grew weary as she thought of the war and what it had done to her family, to her, and probably many folks thereabouts.
It had been an ugly war, pitting friends and family against each other. Race had seen the effect of the war in the many places she passed through. The nearly deserted towns, homes burnt to the ground, and desolate plots of land were just a few to mention. Even the great Oak and Magnolia trees that dotted the territory looked as though they had been through hell.
She glanced up at the farmhouse as not to lose track of it and noted she was much nearer. Just a few more yards and she would meet the path that led to the house. She traipsed on with hope and anticipation that there would be work at the farm.
